Skill Development: To increase employability, the nep 2020 places a significant emphasis on skill development. the program aims to utilize and understand biological databases to gather, store, retrieve, manage, analyse and integrate biological data for generating new knowledge product.

Interdisciplinary Approach: By advocating for an interdisciplinary approach, this program would accommodate learners with diverse science backgrounds would take the advantage of the course. this is consistent with the nep's objective of eradicating educational silos.

Employability: Bioinformatics is a new and an evolving field. the professional skills imparted by this course will help the students to understand the functioning of the industry and prepares the student for the future employment.

Gateway to Advanced Study: M.Sc. bioinformatics graduates can further pursue their Ph.D. in research and development in the fields of genomics, proteomics, metabolomics, and systems biology. they can work on various research projects aimed at curing genetic diseases by editing genes, designing new drugs, reprogram non-human organisms etc.

Promoting Research and Innovation: A fundamental component of the NEP 2020 is to foster research and innovation. The post graduate students can contribute to the research and development in the fields of genomics, proteomics, metabolomics and systems biology.

Incorporating a mechanism for ongoing evaluation and soliciting feedback from industry collaborators and students will facilitate the gradual enhancement of both the course material and instructional approaches

The M.Sc Program is of two years duration and Post Graduate Diploma is applicable if the student selects an exit option after one year. Each year is called an academic year and is divided into two semesters. Thus, there will be a total of two / four semesters. Each semester consists of fifteen weeks of teaching. The teaching-learning process involves theory classes of an hour duration and practical classes of two- or four-hours duration. The curriculum will be delivered through various methods including chalk and talk, laboratories, power point presentations, audio, and video tools, E-learning / E-content, simulations, field trips/ Industry visits, seminars, workshops, projects, models, class discussions, and industrial internship.

Evaluation

The assessment broadly comprises of Internal Assessment (Continuous Evaluation Component) and External Assessment i.e., End Semester Examination. Each course carries 100 marks for theory with 60 marks for Internal Assessment and 40 for End Semester Examination and the practical course carries an additional 50 marks. The internal assessment will be through MCQ, Classroom Tests, Assignments, Oral Presentations, and Short Projects.

Courses

The curriculum structure is based on UGC's prescribed curriculum structure. The Master of Science in Bioinformatics is a two year Post graduate professional course primarily aimed for students from diverse sections of science to understand various biological processes, design new drugs etc by harnessing the power of the computers. The Post Graduate Diploma is one year. This is the exit policy GSFCU offer if the candidate does not want to pursue two year M.Sc Program. The course is designed to make the graduate students ready for exciting careers in post genomic era. High end computation and computational modelling would drive the biological research to new heights in the future. Post graduate diploma in Bioinformatics equips the students with basic skill set essential for continuing higher education, research or getting associated with the industry.
